Hydropower plant of Miranda.

Completed in 1960, Miranda was the second dam constructed by Portugal on the Douro river. The run-of-the-river power station is situated right on the beginning of the international stretch of the Douro, 21km upstream from Bemposta.

Located in the municipality Miranda do Douro, Miranda was originally composed of three Francis turbines with a capacity of 60 MW each, totalizing a net installed capacity of 180 MW. The repowering of the station was concluded on 1995 with the addition of an additional Francis unit with the capacity of 189 MW, installed in a new underground powerhouse. Today the combined power of Miranda I and Miranda II has a total net capacity of 369 MW.

The concrete arch dam is 80 meters height and has a crest length of 263 meters.

The reservoir has an effective storage capacity of 6,4 million cubic meters of water.
