Foz Tua is established on the Tua river, a tributary of the right bank of the Douro. The hydropower plant is located on São Mamede de Riba Tua in the municipality of Alijó, approximately 120 km east of the city of Porto.

Foz Tua, entered service in 2017, is a multipurpose hydro power station composed by a double curvature arch dam and a underground power house with two reversible Francis turbines with a total installed capacity of 274 MW and an average annual production of 305 GWh, with 246 MW of pumping power. Built on the border of a UNESCO landscape protected region, the power plant was built to minimize its visual impact.

The double arch dam has a height of 108 meters and a crest length of 275 meters. The reservoir has an effective storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters of water.
